Allgemeines/ General Information

Jetzt wo ihr wisst warum ich hier bin erzähle ich euch was "hier" genau ist. Porvoo ist wohl die älteste Stadt im Land, je nachdem wen man fragt. Die sogenannte "Sommerstadt", welche schon lange als Inspiration der finnischen Dichter und Denker diente, ist eine gemütliche kleine Stadt im Süden mit 50.000 Einwohnern. Sie bietet eine wunderschöne Altstadt und einige schöne Cafes und Restaurants, unter anderem eine Schokoladenfabrik wo man bei der Herstellung zusehen kann. Insgesamt eine schöne Abwechslung zu dem Alltag in Berlin, durch die Notwendigkeit bzw. Möglichkeit überall hin zu laufen und den deutlich weniger und entspannteren Menschen.

Durch einen Kontakt von unserer Lehrerin zum Point College war es möglich dort endlich einen Praktikumsplatz zu bekommen, nach einigen Absagen von diversen Stellen in Helsinki. Langsam sorgte dies schon für Unmut. Es war echt eine Erleichterung diesen Platz zu haben und nicht doch woanders hin zu müssen. Das Point College, wie wir im Laufe der Zeit gelernt haben, ist eine Mischung aus einer Fachhochschule und einem Oberstufenzentrum, wo so ziemlich jeder erdenkliche Bildungsweg angeboten wird. Letztendlich haben wir damit einen einmaligen Arbeitsplatz finden können, den es in der Form nicht so oft gibt. Dementsprechend erwarten uns wahrscheinlich äußerst interessante Aufgaben. Für die Zeit hier nennen wir ein Studentenwohnheim unser Zuhause. Nach einigen anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten fühlt es sich langsam wie ein richtiges Zuhause an. Mitunter wegen den netten Nachbarn, die größtenteils Austauschstudenten von allen möglichen Orten sind.

Now that you know why I am here I will tell you what "here" is exactly. Porvoo is arguably the oldest city in the country depending on who you ask. The so called "Summer City", which has long since served as inspiration for finnish poets and philosophers, is a quaint little town down south with 50000 inhabitants. It offers a wonderful old city and a few nice cafes and restaurants, among others a chocolate factory where one can observe the preparation. All in all a nice change to everyday life in Berlin, due to the need or rather possibility to walk everywhere and considerably less and more relaxed people.

Through a contact that our teacher had to the Point College it was possible to finally get an internship there after multiple rejections from various organizations in Helsinki. This already started to cause some unrest. It was a huge relief to finally have gotten a spot and not having to go somewhere else afterall. The Point College as we learned over time is a combination of a college and a vocational education center where pretty much every possible kind of education is offered. We certainly found quite a unique working place which does not exist that often in that form. Our tasks will most likely also be quite interesting. For the time here we call a student dorm our home. After some issues in the beginning it is starting to feel like a real home. Also thanks to our nice neighbors that are mostly exchange students from all over.
